Cultural Fusion—
A designer mixes influences from across the globe, at home and at work.

"My manhattan home reflects a collector's aesthetic," says interior designer Thomas Hays, of the wide variety of antiquities and objects he's amassed from his travels through Europe, Asia, and Africa. His greatest souvenir? A riad in the oldest section of Marrakech that he bought after visiting the city in 2006. A year later, he transformed it into a five-suite hotel called Riad Meriem. There he blended age-old Moroccan motifs with Asian art and textiles, plus his own contemporary designs and photography. On view at both the loft and the hotel: His "ancient modern" sensibility places aged elements in a contemporary context..
